The comparison between the two Ferrari drivers following the Grand Prix could not have been more extreme.
Charles Leclerc stood to the podium soaking up the adoration of thousands of tifosi observing the Ferrari win in Italy.
Down in the paddock, the four-time world champion who started this season as the number-one motorist of the team, Sebastian Vettel, faced the media, compelled to talk about the hottest in a long lineup of errors that return to June 2018.
This really was the ninth error in 27 races because a year’s French Grand Prix of Vettel. He’s been keeping up a success rate of one every three events and when he’s perplexed and bemused by what is going on, he is far from the only one indoors Formula 1.
This one has been very the worst of this lot. The majority of the others have come with another car in battle, or under stress. He was running in fourth position, maintaining pace with all the three leaders – Leclerc and the two Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton – when he spun going on the lap throughout the Ascari chicane and lost control.
That might have been bad enough, but then came the part. About rejoining the race looking for or thinking about any automobiles vettel set, and he battled with the Racing Point of Lance Stroll, that ran in location.
It was akin to pulling from a T-junction if anyone came without looking. An astonishing error for any racing driver let alone one of expertise and Vettel’s experience.
He had no explanation.
“Clearly I am not satisfied with this,” he said. “I lost the rear and could not catch it.
“I struggled a few times to get the car moving. A few times I got the anti-stall and that I struggled to get in the ideal direction as well so he couldn’t be seen by me. It was impossible to find the cars . I was stuck too a bit onto the kerb so didn’t help.”
He obviously thought the speediest cars would have built a gap and he would have clear track. Nevertheless, it was early in the raceand the difference was never likely to be big.
On the surface of it, this appears to get fit into a pattern that looks familiar with Vettel’s errors in recent times. In minutes that are stressed, a type of mist seems to descend which reduces his ability for thinking.
The thing that is concerning is that the errors keep happening. After making a series think about how to prevent it occurring and Vettel was supposed to move away for winter. But they’ve continued with less or more the identical frequency into 2019.
Vettel explained he had not been affected by the qualifying controversy , and that he had not lost any love for F1.
“Nonot really, I haven’t,” he said. “I love what I do but when you are not doing well once you know you can do this, you can’t be joyful.”
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff proposed against criticising Vettel much.
“Today is a bad race for him,” Wolff said. “He had a bout of bad races. I’m just saying don’t write him off because he’s a world winner and also the difference between the ones and the ones is the ones can get up again. I don’t have any doubt he can do that.”
Hamilton said something after the last huge Vettel error. Problem is, now there is not a lot of evidence to suggest they are correct.
It may not have come at a worse time for Vettel. Since Leclerc has arrived on strongly this season, debate about the consequences for Vettel has lasted.
Monza was the seventh race at a row where Leclerc had Vettel. There were extenuating conditions this time – Vettel did not possess a slipstream on his lap to qualifying prevented him performing a different, and the farcical end – however, a clear pattern is emerging.
While Vettel is to get off the mark and two races have been won by Leclerc. Taking a look at the rest of the races – the tracks and also the routine of Ferrari’s form – it is far from certain he will find another opportunity.
Authentic, Vettel could have won in Canada had not made the error of running off the trail, crowding Hamilton on his return and earning the contentious penalty that ensued, but was not the only time he has vaguely looked as a winner this season while Leclerc ought to have won at Bahrain and could have won in Baku and Austria.
On Saturday, as had been agreed Vettel was quite unhappy with Leclerc’s failure to figure out a means through the visitors and provide him a tow to get the next runs privately.
The tension in the team had increased. His status as staff leader under serious threat, Vettel might have achieved with a powerful race, ambitious Leclerc, helping with Mercedes, to start re-establishing his position.
Rather, this.
Vettel has another year on his Ferrari contract, however, the way things are moving he will have gone , from the team driver into a de facto support action to Leclerc, within the area of one year. He is a proud person and is not likely to take kindly to this.
Right now, for Vettel, it’s tough to know what comes next.
While Vettel suffered one of the worst races of his profession, his team-mate was out front confirming his status.
This is a superb win, albeit a contentious one, a fantastic drive in a thrilling race, where Leclerc needed to sustain the most intense pressure or the other for the entirety of the race space.
It was an absolutely fantastic grand prix to observe and overall a superlative drive . But there were a couple of shaky moments.
Hamilton landed a run on Leclerc to the next chicane after the two had overtaken Nico Hulkenberg’s out-of-stop-sequence Renault down the key straight.
To Leclerc and the outside moved on him Hamilton edging on to prevent a collision, the world champion went.
Leclerc appeared to have come close to breaking up the principle that states a driver moving back to the line to protect his place must leave a vehicle’s width . He said he thought he’d; Hamilton stated he definitely had not.
Max Verstappen attracted a similar move in the first chicane on Bottas and has been supplied a five-second penalty. But Leclerc got away using a black warning flag – the equivalent of a yellow card.
Leclerc clattered over the place that was run-off and secured up in the first chicane. Again, Hamilton got a run on himand this time Leclerc defended robustly going very late to obstruct Hamilton to the left of the Ferrari handed.
“There is some hazardous driving happening,” Hamilton stated on the radio. The stewards did not.
Leclerc confessed he was challenging, but stated:”I just tried to be in the limit of what is okay.
“I understood he had been on the right. He braked since he did not want to test the exterior around. I thought I had left a vehicle’s diameter ”
The simple fact has advised his strategy that Verstappen got off with barging him and on the Ferrari wide when he handed over the penultimate lap in Austria for victory.
“Since Austria it’s clear we can go somewhat further in how we can shield and overtaking in the bitterness,” Leclerc said. “Austria helped me change this approach. This was thanks to this I managed to win. It was very on the limit but I am pleased to race like this.”
Hamilton appeared convinced.
“It was interesting,” Hamilton explained. “I learnt a lot about his personality now for a driver as you do if you are racing with various drivers and I will know better for next time.
“You’ll find a few surprises – the ones that you saw. Nevertheless, it is all knowledge for the future.
“We’ve only always asked for consistency. A principle was put in place and todayn’t abided it and they utilized different consequences. I don’t really know why that is the situation. It’s motor racing and I figure the stewards woke up on the different side of their bed.
“In case Verstappen must have that last calendar year, then the identical rule should apply.”
So far, the association between Hamilton and Leclerc has been respectful and hot, and the man said there was no reason for that to change.
“There is not any absence of admiration between drivers,” he said. “There is not any issue. He was congratulated by me . He is one of the drivers that are most respectful.
“That is actually the very first time that I’ve gone wheel to wheel, you understand how motorists approach various scenarios and perhaps I would place my automobile differently next time and do a better job next time.”
Hamilton reported that, had the title not yet been at stake, he would have driven differently:”I would not have proceeded and we’d have collided.”
He added:”It’s just about zero issue with us. He did an excellent job. We do not have a problem. {If we get a moment together we may chat and reverse roles and make sure he’s OK when I do exactly the exact same|If I do exactly the exact same, if we receive a moment together we might talk and undo functions and make sure he is OK|If I do the exact same if we get a moment we might talk and undo roles and make sure he’s OK|If we get a moment we reverse and {migh
